In Memory Of Carolyn Aziza Cannon
Here on the Mersey the belly dancing community have lost a wonderful soul who created so many performance opportunities for over a decade. Carolyn or as she was known to us Aziza unfortunately passed away from a stroke while on holiday in her beloved Morocco, she was with her beloved husband Jim. We can't speak for everyone but we can tell you from our experience that Aziza offered the hand of friendship and support to us helping to link up with dancers on the Wirral, she included welcomed and supported our groups by inviting us to her haflas and making our time fun interesting and very social. In recent years she was one of the reasons the little non exsisting wirral belly dance community made links with Liverpool Northwales and Chester and lots of other parts of the North west belly dance community where we came together socially to do what we love....Dance and we have made many friends along the way thanks to Aziza. Aziza also encouraged us to create haflas on the Wirral and helped us with our day of dance Christmas time 2021 and it was a success, she has inspired us to keep the flame alive in future. Her events are named from the Nile to the Mersey and her group are Azizas Angels. Her husband Jim is keeping the flame ignited and is continuing to run haflas and charitable events.
Pre covid we often met up on Bold Street for a Turkish lunch at Elif and we chatted for hours, Aziza told us of her experiences dancing at Greek restaurants well before belly dance was a commercial thing, she danced to live Greek bands and knew all about Greek dance as well as belly dance. We often tried to talk her into running a workshops for dancers with Greek musician but unfortunately it didn't happen. There are plenty of stories people in the dance community share about aziza buy mainly she was a kind person who loved dancing and she loved to bring people together. She will be dearly missed and the belly dance community will not be the same without you but your soul continues to inspire all of us to be a community. Rest in peace Carolyn Aziza Cannon now you really are dancing with the angels. From all tbe people you have inspired here at Tara belly dance over the years thank you.
