DIY Belly Dance Cane Students

My Influenster - click to view

When I first started learning how to belly dance I was put into a group with other students and we where given a cane belly dance choreographed routine to learn and perform. I took to cane dancing really quickly and absolutely enjoyed it however I was a young single mother on benefits and I could not afford to buy a cane to perform with unlike the other girls I was in the group with. My friend who is part Egyptian gave me the idea to take a humble garden cane and decorate it the way I wanted it. "What a great idea I thought". So I went into the garden and found a tatty bamboo stick/cane that had been used to prop up one of our massive sunflowers. I gave it a quick wash and rooted through my fabric bag only to find the exact same material I had use to hand make a costume. Th only glue I had in the house was my sons PVA glue that was in his crayon box. I got started and realised I had a knack and good technique for this kind of stuff. Within ten minutes I had a dance cane that was gorgeous and matched the costume I was to wear for the cane dance performance. So the night came and back stage lots of other student dancers and professional performer asked me where I bought my cane and i basically told them "Thanks..I made it"
Years later I own lots of bought professional canes that I love but I still make and use my original humble creation (thanks to my inspirational positive friend) at events and at class.
I thought I should share my story and my creation with the world and all of the dancing mothers and women who don't have much money. If anything you will have an original that no one else will  have and that's a blessing on its own. So here is the tutorial video below.
I hope you enjoy getting creative. Send your comments & pics to taradanceinfo@gmail.com
