Read Student Feedback
MORE ABOUT THE CLASSES My classes are good for anyone looking to learn a new skill, meet new positive people, find a new way to work out or to boost confidence levels. Even if you already attend another dance class and fancy a bit of a change. I work on an all inclusive basis and all I expect is for each and every student to be open to learning, to listen, To be responsible for your own physical well being and to be be positive and respect the dance form, culture of the dance as well as respecting fellow students and teacher. Belly dance is great for Women because it does not discriminate, you do not have to be a certain body shape(My Mother is of Middle Eastern decent and is the slimmest Women I know and is an amazing belly dancer and One of my good friends is a very cuddly curvaceous Caucasian Women and is also an amazing belly dancer...yes it is not the body shape that make's the Women... despite what ignorant negative people say..that is just another way to dis-empower Women), age, race or religion and you don't need to be an extrovert or an introvert you just need to be yourself, except yourself and other Women. Many people of the pagan faiths and Women's religion's believe that belly dancers draw upon healing feminine goddess energy that puts us in touch with our inner goddess which then allows us to appreciate our selves as women and gives us confidence and acceptance of ourselves and other Women. Psychologist's(I like to call brain scientist's) would probably argue about that saying spending time with like minded positive Women, whist having fun exercising which would release endorphin's happy hormones) into the blood stream which would help with confidence and happiness. I take both into consideration but I do believe from my personal experience healing from abusive relationship and from working with Women's and children's aid that belly dance is a lot different than regular forms of dance and exercise and I do feel belly dance connects Women together in a different more positive kind of way as well as improving self confidence and empowerment. I was once asked "how can belly dance be empowering to Women and boost self confidence when history say's it is all about enticing men and making one self into a sexual object" well the Lady who questioned me was quite right to ask that because there is documented historical proof at one point in time that belly dance was in co-hoots with prostitution...but as I said one point in time...what about the historical documented proof in ancient tomb paintings long before the historical period the question lady asked about? Belly dance is the oldest form of dance back when God was a Women. When women used belly dance as a form of worship, back when Women where in high regard. Yes when Women ruled Ancient Egypt. All this you see was whey before Male dominated religions...before Women suffered and where dis-respected just for being Women. That my friends is a whole new kettle of fish and another day and blog post. Belly was a way for Women and Children to socialize back when Men where off to War. Women danced together and Children joined in. Belly dance moves such as the belly roll and Undulations where used and still are used as a form of pain relief from menstruation and child birth.Belly dance was a Joy for all and still is as long as we don't link it with Sex. Yes it is a very sensual dance and Feminine and yes can be interpreted as sexual depending on the what the dancer is trying to say with her body and facial expressions and what the viewer is perceiving. Belly dance in a restaurant and Party setting is for family entertainment and from my own personal experience it is the Women who love belly dancing over the Men. With Everything said Belly dance is a joy for all and is a celebration of us Women. It is not a religion though it is important to look at the history of the dance form and take inspiration from the themes the way an actor would when developing a role.Belly Dance is for every Women. ZILLS, ZILLS, ZILLS..........
Finger cymbals are first and foremost a musical instrument. Finger cymbals are also called zills and sagats. They are used quite alot in belly dance and it is said that a really good belly dancer should be able to dance whilst playing zills.
They come in a set of four and should be place upon the thumbs and the middle fingers.
They come in different kinds of metals including brass and come in different sizes, qualities and prices. For beginners just starting out in the art of belly dance and zill playing the more inexpensive kind will be fine for practice but for the more experienced professional dancer the larger better quality and more expensive ones should be played. For the beginner zills should have two holes in the centre of the zill. Elastic should be purchased from any fabric shop. Feed the elastic through the zill and secure with a knot, fabric glue, a very small button or a very small safety pin.(ensure the elastic/knot/glue/button/saftey pin does not get in the way or inter-fear with the natural sound of the zills)
THE HISTORY OF........ Cymbals where originally known as a sacred instrument and the word cymbal comes from the goddess Cybele. They where said to be played by the ancient Babylonians and Assyrians. Cymbals and similar instruments have been found by archaeologists in Nimrud (Norther Iraq). They where used throughout the Middle East, Persia, Turkey,Arabia and Northern Africa. Today they are mainly played by Turkish dancers but are sadly are not used by many Egyptian dancers although there are some dancers in Egypt who are very skilled in this art form. The use of zill work in dance is very old indeed and there is archeologic evidence of this dating 1st Century CE. There are many artworks depicting the use of zill work and dancing where both Men and Women perform. There are also historical roots in today's Flamenco dancing thatt lie in Andalusian dance called Zambra Mora (Moorish Party)Dating back 1400's. It was said to be performed barefoot with finger cymbals. Some flameco dancer still use zills as part of their performance.
PLAYING THE ZILLS........
Zills can be played in different ways, a clacking harsher sound, a tapping sound or a ringing tone depending on the sound you want to achieve or the type of music you are playing along to.
When playing zills the dominant hand should lead. 1 being the dominant hand and 2 being the other hand. eg 1-2-1-2 is R-L-R-L(right hand) or L-R-L-R (left hand) There are at least 18 finger cymbal rhythmic patterns.
HERE ARE SOME BASIC RHYTHM PATTERNS FOR YOU TO PRACTICE..... *QUADS 1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2 (alternating)
*TRIPLETS 1-2-1-pause 1-2-1-pause 1-2-1-pause (galloping sound, giddy up)
TRY THESE ONES YOUR SELF
*BELEDI dum/dum/tek-a-tek/dum/tek-a-tek
CHIFTATELLI dum/dum/tek-a-tek/dum/dum/dum
Put some music on and practice putting the rhythms together. As soon as you pick up basic rhythms start moving around whilst playing so you can get used to dancing whilst playing. DON'T WORRY IF YOU FIND IT HARD AT FIRST, YOU MUSCLE MEMORY WILL KICK IN AND YOU WILL GET THE HANG OF IT EVENTUALLY. I SAY WHEN EVER YOU PUT THE KETTLE ON FOR A CUPPA HAVE YOUR ZILLS NEAR BYE AND PRACTICE. PRACTICE DOES MAKE PERFECT!
TIPS...TIPS...TIPS.... 1.Store zills in a small drawstring bag of your chosen fabric. 2.Make sure the elastic on your zills is secure and fits your unique fingers comfortably ..not too tight...not too loose...just right! 3.If you have brass zills polish them, keep them looking shiny. 4.Practice Practice Practice.... until they fit you perfectly. 5.Most of all ....Enjoy :)
Check out my youtube video.... Check out the dance sequence with zills video below

WHY BELLY DANCE? Belly dance is fun and feminine. It is for every Women no matter your age, shape, size, ethnicity or religion. A great way to keep in shape. It tones and sculpts the body and pelvic floor area,It Makes us feel great and confident. Give us better posture for all round spinal health.Belly dance is a good form of cardiovascular and conditioning exercise, meaning it is great if you are looking to control high body fat whilst toning the muscles. It helps to pump the blood around the body faster helping to improve circulation which helps the skin to look more healthy. This also helps to slow down the ageing process. The movements such as circles and waving motions and other belly dance exercises increases the production of synovial fluid to the bone joint areas to keeping them lubricated and supple helping or warding off bones and joint disorders. The posture is re-aligned helping with all round spinal heath and also helping the major organs to work properly. When we have bad posture we not only have negative body language but we also squash our major organs so they are not working to their full potential. Good posture helps us to breath properly helping release the stale air and making us feel a lot more relaxed. As mentioned above negative posture is associated with negative body language. A lot of leading body language experts believe that correct body posture can lead to positive body language and makes us look more confident which tricks the mind into feeling more positive. The body and the mind work in unison and has a knock on effect where confidence is concerned. Belly dance is a Women's dance therefore is very much feminine in energy. It helps us to connect with our selves and to accept our selves and others just as we are. There is no need to worry about what the media say's is beautiful, being your self, accepting yourself and loving and respecting our selves is what is the most beautiful thing any one can be. Belly dance helps us to step into our own power.Belly dance pre-dates Christianity and Islam and it is said to be used in the ancient days in preparation to child birth. Belly dance features in many mythological stories and folk tales. It is said that belly dance was used as a form of worship in the temples of the goddess all around the world. There are many depictions of this that can be viewed in art from ancient Egypt and Greece and many others.Belly dance is a community with in its self therefore you will be socialising making friends and connecting with like minded people in a positive way. Belly dance is very empowering.

Tara Tazara : Posted on 21 July 2012 11:19
Belly dance is a feminine dance linked to the goddess in all her forms and faces. Today is the Mayan new year and with all the talk on the Mayan calendar ending this year I though it was significant to share my though and philosophy on this. Before I share my though I would first like to stress that I do not aim to ruffle anyone's feathers or disrespect anyone's religion or culture. I am christened Roman catholic and share many spiritual belief systems from around the world and not all of them are linked to the Roman Catholic religion but they all work for me. The goddess spirituality or religion is there in addition to whatever belief system or church you belong to, She does not judge or discriminate. The year-this year 2012 for me-is the end of the world as we know it. Positive thinking Meta-physics and an holistic way of living will be more prominent. With today being the mayan newyear...and this year being the end of the mayan calendar,Alaghom, Mayan goddess of the mind is who we will be working with. First of all let me explain in depth about my philosophy on the end of the world. Our lives are our worlds. Our lives are split up into various categories such as, family, relationships, lifestyle, work, play and so on. Some times certain area's in our lives bring us down, make us think and feel negative so we may decide to make a change in that area of our lives for the better. When we make that change and we feel positive about it this changes our mindset so this is the end of that world as we knew it making way for the new world with new possibilities. So today is July 21st 2012 Mayan new year and the goddess message today is...Greet the new year with joy..live each day making every moment in our lives count, making them magical and filling them with the goddess energy and think positive and change all the things that are holding you back or that are not working for you.
GODDESS PRAYER******* Collect all the calenders in the house (including diaries, appointment books ect) Lay your hands on top of them and ask Alaghom to bless you with the ability to see possibilities with in yourself, help you to see the spirit in all things on this earth including within your self.
I wish you all peace, love, positivity and freedom
